James R. Doty, MD
James R. Doty, MD, is a professor in the neurosurgery department at Stanford University School of Medicine and the founder and director of the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research—of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor. His research focuses on the neural basis of compassion and altruism and how that understanding affects health and longevity. Dr. Doty is an inventor, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist who has supported health clinics worldwide, neuroscience research, and peace initiatives. He is the senior editor of Handbook of Compassion Science, soon to be released by Oxford University Press, and The New York Times bestselling author of Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart, which is being translated into twenty-two languages.
